Horse Camp off to galloping start

Today was the first day of the first session of Horse Camp at Bachman Academy. The campers, ages 9-14 this week, range in riding experience from beginners to intermediate riders.

Before the beginners even had time to be nervous, Mrs. Trotter had everyone booted, helmeted, mounted and off onto the trails. Along the way she went over the dos and don’ts of horse safety and by the time they stopped for a break, everyone looked as comfortable as cowboys in their saddles.

Senior Banquet Honors

The Five Point Museum in Cleveland, TN was filled with emotional highs and lows as the faculty and staff roasted their seniors at a banquet in their honor on May 15, 2009.  The large conference room was crowded as nearly 100 parents, peers, faculty and staff gathered to honor the 9 seniors.

Mr. Bob McPeak, Bachman’s Woodworking Instructor, organized the event with the assistance of Melody Savio, the Academy’s Business Manager.  Mr. Bob, as he is fondly called by the students,  put together a terrific Year in Review video presentation.

Senior students receiving honors were:

Hannah Miller of Kentucky: Math Award

Hana Hinds from Maryland: Woodworking and Auto Mechanic Award

David Kamitsuka from North Carolina: Upper North Dorm Award

Chris Manchik of Chattanooga: President’s Educational Excellence Award

Andre Nassif from Dubai: President’s Educational Achievement Award

Natalie Taveras from Atlanta: American Citizenship Award, Horticulture Award, John Muir Naturalist Award and Lupton Dorm Award

It is going to be difficult to replace this graduating class.  Hannah, Hana, David and Natalie served on Bachman’s Student Leadership Council, as well as a variety of community service projects and clubs.

Press Release: Terry Cannon Keynote Speaker at Commencement

Artist Terry Cannon to Keynote Bachman Academy Commencement

CLEVELAND, TN – Terry Cannon, local folk artist whose work is included in the permanent collections of the Mennello Museum of American Folk Art, Cadillac, Disney, and Coca-Cola among others, is slated to be the keynote speaker at Bachman Academy’s 2009 Commencement Ceremonies, Saturday, May 16.

Cannon, a self-taught artist, began creating whimsical images as a child. He says that his work reflects gratitude in being a participant in the journey of life. “I believe we each have our gifts from the creator…and it takes courage to discover and honor these gifts,” says Cannon. “I feel completely connected to a higher power when I am making art, and I love it when people react to my work with smiles and laughter. It reminds me that we are all connected.”

“The creative process for me is inspiration, intuition, and improvisation. An image comes to me, and I allow creativity to flow through me. I share the belief of many artists that I am merely the vessel. The colors, textures, and images in my work are a constant source of surprise and wonder to me. I would say that the main statement I wish to convey through my art is that life is a magnificent gift, and I am so very grateful to be a participant.”

Cannon is an ideal choice for commencement speaker for the Bachman Academy graduation, since the skills necessary to be a successful artist and entrepreneur are similar to the skills the Bachman graduates have learned in order to overcome and to harness the advantages in their various learning differences. For example, one of the graduates has had great success with art therapy this year, and as a result has been accepted to college and will be pursuing a degree in art in the fall.

Since changing its focus in 1999 to educating children with learning differences, the Academy has graduated 74 students. These students were on the path to becoming drop-out statistics if not for the intervention of their parents and the knowledgeable staff at Bachman Academy.  Their learning differences created obstacles that seemed insurmountable. However, with an almost one to one staff to student ratio, and a one-of-a-kind curriculum, Bachman students have the rare opportunity to achieve their academic goals while learning to capitalize on their individual learning styles.

Bachman Academy, a school for students in grades K-12 who have learning differences like Dyslexia and AD/HD, will hold its eighth commencement exercises on Saturday, May 16, 2009 at First Presbyterian Church in Cleveland, Tennessee. The Class of 2009 is comprised of nine students, eight from the US and one international student from Dubai. The states represented are the District of Columbia, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Washington.
