CPR Certification for Bachman Students

Recently Bachman Academy students received training in CPR & First Aid. The students were divided in to two rotating groups, CPR and first aid in the morning and academics in the afternoon and vice versa.  It took two days for everyone to receive training, but by the end, all of the students who attempted the training passed their tests and received their certifications. The topics covered were HeartSaver (HS) Adult CPR, Child CPR, Choking, HS AED, HS First Aid, and Environmental Emergencies.

The students were able to take this course on the Bachman campus, as Mr. Heath Hall, Mechanics Instructor, and Mrs. Janel Bradley, Campus Nurse, are both certified to teach CPR and First Aid by the American Heart Association.

In addition to this training, Bachman’s Health and Wellness class were also visited by Todd Black, Paramedic with Bradley County EMS. Mr. Black talked with the class about Emergency Medical Services: what paramedics do on the scene of an accident or when called in an emergency, and the criteria for airlifting patients. He said that they are there for basic life support, but also for more advanced care as needed: medications, airways, etc. Mr. Black also told the class a few anecdotes of different calls he’s been on during his 25 years as a paramedic.

A Great Ending to a Wonderful First Semester

We are bringing to a close, a wonderful first semester of education, camaraderie and old-fashioned fun at Bachman Academy.  The growth and maturity the students have demonstrated is amazing.  They are engaged learners who are pushing the teacher to raise the bar on learning.  Our students have become young ladies and gentlemen, with tremendous empathy and compassion for all members of our community.  Today during our Christmas Luncheon, a few of our young men, Joe, Joey and Estefano greeted and seated our guests with confidence and ease.  Aaron didn’t let a single guest slip in the front door without signing the guest registry.  John R. formally welcomed the 80-90 people to the luncheon, followed by Matt B. who offered a heart-felt prayer.  Justin and Ryan were busy filling the tea and water glasses of the diners, lead by head waiter Trent, who kept everyone moving along.  Mark M. and Justin helped with the food service, alongside Alice and the wonderful Sodexho staff.  Two of our stellar dorm parents, John Pitner and John Morris, and our multi-talented administrative aide Barbara Faris, cooked the turkeys, in addition to the ham prepared by Mr. Frizzell’s wife Gale.  The dining hall was aglow  with holiday decor, under the guidance of  Patti Brand, Melody Savio and Hope Dugan.  Logan and Mark M. stayed after the luncheon to help with clean-up.  What a wonderfully supportive faculty and staff we are blessed with.  And our student body is outstanding.

Some of our distinguished guests included: Fred Lupton, Board of Trustees member; Jane Scruggs, former Board of Trustees member; Betty Brakebill, who husband is a former Board of Trustees member; Pastor Anthony of Young Life; Dianne Pierce, retired teacher; Zach Gibbens, former student; and Connie Frizzell, mother of our Assistant Headmaster, Mark Frizzell.    Former Equine instructor Linda Trotter arrived, much  to the delight of the students, and the newest member of our faculty and equine instructor, Kody Russell and his “wife-to-be” Cynthia Aller, were introduced during the event.

During the afternoon assembly, everyone agreed that the event went well, and everyone had a good time.  By the way, students in Mrs. Gray’s Classical Reading class are beginning the study of the classical literature Phantom of the Opera.  When what to our wondering eyes should appear, but…the Phantom himself…sitting quietly in the middle of the dinning hall wearing a sign that read, “Don’t touch me!  I am Red Death stalking!”  It was another great day at Bachman Academy.

Family and Friends Weekend

As always, Family & Friends Weekend was great fun for our students and their families! F&F is an annual event at Bachman Academy for the parents, family and friends of our students. Through this event, they have a rare opportunity to experience a bit of what their child experiences daily at Bachman Academy, as well as giving them time to get to know one another, and most important, giving them time to spend with their children.

This year there was a great line up of events, including:

  • Videos of student dramatic performances from reading and English classes, and other student skits performed live.
  • An abbreviated class schedule for the parents to have a run-through of their child’s academic day.
  • A “parents only” luncheon to give parents time to get to know one another.
  • A Parent Association meeting
  • A Young Marines Parade
  • A demonstration by the Equestrian Drill Team
  • An Automotive Demonstration and tire-changing contest
  • Parent/teacher conferences
  • And a fantastic Wish List silent auction! Our fantastic parents raised nearly $8,000 for items on our Wish List!

Thanks to everyone for such a wonderful event!

CHADD Conference

So many great things are going on this weekend! It’s Family & Friends Weekend at Bachman Academy, and the campus is jumping with so many activities and excitement. More to come soon about F&F in another post…

While the students, their families and the Bachman faculty enjoyed a lovely weekend together, the Bachman Admissions team was busy travelling to Cleveland, Ohio for the annual CHADD Conference. We had a great time meeting lots of folks at the conference. There were parents, AD/HD coaches, psychologists, other schools & summer programs, and vendors with cool new AD/HD related products. We learned a great deal about the latest in AD/HD research and techniques and are excited to be back at the Bachman campus in a couple of days so we can share all that we learned.
