Family and Friends Weekend

As always, Family & Friends Weekend was great fun for our students and their families! F&F is an annual event at Bachman Academy for the parents, family and friends of our students. Through this event, they have a rare opportunity to experience a bit of what their child experiences daily at Bachman Academy, as well as giving them time to get to know one another, and most important, giving them time to spend with their children.

This year there was a great line up of events, including:

  • Videos of student dramatic performances from reading and English classes, and other student skits performed live.
  • An abbreviated class schedule for the parents to have a run-through of their child’s academic day.
  • A “parents only” luncheon to give parents time to get to know one another.
  • A Parent Association meeting
  • A Young Marines Parade
  • A demonstration by the Equestrian Drill Team
  • An Automotive Demonstration and tire-changing contest
  • Parent/teacher conferences
  • And a fantastic Wish List silent auction! Our fantastic parents raised nearly $8,000 for items on our Wish List!

Thanks to everyone for such a wonderful event!

CHADD Conference

So many great things are going on this weekend! It’s Family & Friends Weekend at Bachman Academy, and the campus is jumping with so many activities and excitement. More to come soon about F&F in another post…

While the students, their families and the Bachman faculty enjoyed a lovely weekend together, the Bachman Admissions team was busy travelling to Cleveland, Ohio for the annual CHADD Conference. We had a great time meeting lots of folks at the conference. There were parents, AD/HD coaches, psychologists, other schools & summer programs, and vendors with cool new AD/HD related products. We learned a great deal about the latest in AD/HD research and techniques and are excited to be back at the Bachman campus in a couple of days so we can share all that we learned.

History and Archaeology at Bachman

Recently, students in Bachman’s High School History classes visited the Lynn H. Wood Archaeological Museum at Southern Adventist University. There, they were able to see genuine artifacts from the time of Abraham in Ur through the Roman Empire.

The museum manager gave them a private tour through the museum, explaining the background of the artifacts and displays in detail. He answered the students’ many questions about time periods, and how some of the pottery and buildings were created.

“I think the experience was very valuable in showing students how we discover the past and learning how people lived,” said Tammy Henkel, History Instructor at Bachman.

Larkin Davis, senior at Bachman, was intrigued by a story of Neuchadnezzer in Babylon.  Larkin said, “When Nebuchadnezzar rebuilt Babylon, he had his name stamped into every brick that made up the city so that everyone who lived in there would remember that he’s the one who built it.”

After the field trip, the students arrived back at the campus to find their very own archaeological dig set up for them. They employed the same methods to find hidden “artifacts” in the sand (photos of real artifacts) that real archaeologists used to find the artifacts now housed in the museum at Southern. In the midst of the photos of actual artifacts, were pieces of flotsam and detrius just like one would find at a real dig. The students had to determine what were actual “artifacts” and what items were not. They then researched the artifacts they found to determine a relative time period and how they might have been used.
